Goodbye Kentucky, Hello Florida!

I was never a big fan of New Edition, but the lyrics to this song from their 1988 album "Heartbreak" pretty much summed up my feelings last night when I pre-posted this entry. It's a heartfelt sentiment on my part...as long as you don't actually picture me singing. Then it just becomes completely laughable. So put that thought out of your mind. Don't think about me singing these words. Seriously.

I'm Comin' Home

Save tomorrow for me
I’m comin’ home to you
Oh girl my baby

Save tomorrow for me
I’m comin’ home to you
Oh girl my baby

I just called you up
Because you’ve been on my mind
So I can tell you what I feel
Ooh I’m missing you
I’ve been away too long
Now I’m coming home to you
It’s been hard for me
To fall asleep at night--my love
Because without you
I feel so--alone
So I’m coming home

Save tomorrow for me
I’m comin’ home to you
Oh girl my baby
Save tomorrow for me
I’m coming home to you
Oh girl my baby

Since the day I left
And you went on your own way
My life’s just not the same
Ooh baby I’m needing you
And longing for your touch
Can I get a message through

I can hardly wait
To hold you in my arms
Oh girl
So don’t be busy
Cancel everything
'Cause I’m
'Cause tomorrow’s my day

Save tomorrow for me (aw baby)
I’m comin’ home to you (and I want it all)
Oh girl my baby (my baby)
Save tomorrow for me (aw baby)
I’m coming home to you (girl, I’m comin’ home)
Oh girl my baby (my baby)

Save tomorrow for me (missing you....needing you)
I’m comin’ home to you (wanting you...each and every minute of the day)
Oh girl my baby (yeah)
Save tomorrow for me (I know you know. sugar, I know you know.)
I’m coming home to you (I’m comin’ home to you)
Oh girl my baby

Away too long
Missing you so I’m comin’ home
Save me tomorrow
Away too long
Missing you so I’m comin’ home
Save me tomorrow

See you in a few short hours baby.

Wrapping Up Here In Kentucky

Today is my last full day in Kentucky. First thing this morning I'll drive to a meeting with a congressional staffer and the mayor of a city in that congressman's district. I won't get back to my office until sometime between 2 and 3pm. Then I will take care of several check-out procedures and processes, turn in my laptop, cellphone and printer, and hopefully get out of the office between 5 and 6pm.

Since my flight home leaves so early tomorrow morning, the rental car counter won't be open. Although I could drop the car and keys and let them send me the paperwork (which I've done before), I'm never comfortable with that. Instead, since I drive by the airport every day going to and from work, I'm going to drop the car off after work when the counter is still open and then have the hotel shuttle take me back to my temporary home on the road. I'll use the same hotel shuttle to leave for the airport Saturday morning at 4:45am.

Have I mentioned I'm NOT a morning person?

But, I always prefer to catch the earliest flight out, especially if there is a connecting flight to make, so that I don't get caught up in the typical late morning to late afternoon back up air traffic delays or weather issues. Although this Saturday morning the forecast is for severe thunderstorms when my flight is supposed to take off from Lexington for Atlanta. Figures, doesn't it? LOL

As always, or at least with as with most assignments, I have enjoyed my time, seen some new part of this great country of ours, learned some new things and made some new acquaintances in my professional life. All in all, it has been a great experience.

But now, I'm looking forward to seeing my wife, family and friends and celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary with a special surprise for Cindy.

Losing My Home Office

Cindy and I spent all day last Friday cleaning our respective home offices, but there was one tiny little difference in the final outcome; I was cleaning mine out for good.

It's akin to Superman closing down his Fortress of Solitude or Batman giving up his Batcave.

But truth be told I had not been spending a lot of time there over the past 2 years. One of the reasons I bought my first laptop was to be able to do my research in the living room in the company of my wife (though I still do my writing, most of it, in solitary), so that brought down the amount of time I spent in there. In addition, my traveling has kept me out of there and over the past several months it had become more of a place to throw any boxes I shipped home to await my arrival and unpacking.

The major reason though is that we are still optimistically hoping to follow through on our plan to build a cabin on our property in the mountains later this year and sell this place, despite the crappy economy. Though we are dramatically reducing our amount of "stuff", we will still need a room to store some things while we do some remodeling, repainting and re-flooring and since Cindy still uses her office quite a bit...well I drew the short straw. Plus, have you priced storage units lately? For a room the size of my office we'd have to make another monthly mortgage payment!

So the only things from my office that will remain in that room for now will be my two bookshelves, a rolltop desk for my laptop and a credenza for the scanner and printer, all pushed into one corner of the room but still useable when needed. The rest of the room is already filling up with tubs, boxes and crates, even as I continue to clean out more "stuff" from the office that we have been giving to family, friends and the trash collector, or donating to Goodwill and the library.

So while I AM a little sad, it's not really THAT big of a deal. Plus, when the cabin is built, I'll have an office that looks out over our creek and the mountain. Not a bad trade.

Christmas Day 2008

After the festivities on Christmas Eve, Cindy and I were up at 5am and over at Jeremy and Wendy's by 6. When Amber and Shawn arrived, we exchanged gifts and then jumped in our cars for the drive to Deltona for breakfast and Christmas morning gift-opening with AnnMarie, Jason, Mikey and Heather. The best part of Christmas is watching the grandkids open their presents. I think both Mikey and Heather got a lot of gifts and toys that they will enjoy for a while (at least a week). Heather loved her toy kitty that purrs and stretches its paws and the Dora the Explorer tricycle, while Mikey, our 7-year old budding computer programmer, was intensely excited when he opened his "How to" programming book and his Bill Gates biography.

Photos from both those fun gatherings are up on Flickr.

Cindy and I left Deltona and drove to Downtown Disney where we enjoyed a nice stroll, had lunch at the Earl of Sandwich and then went to the AMC theater to watch "The Day The Earth Stood Still", starring Keanu Reeves in a role he was born to play...an alien in the form of a human that displays no facial expression and speaks in a monotone. Talk about owning a role!

The rest of the afternoon and evening we spent relaxing at home. All in all, a nice, enjoyable day.

Home Again

With apologies to Carole King, but this song is SO appropriate considering the cold, snow, sleet and ice I've been "enjoying" here in Missouri.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm ever gonna make it home again
It's so far and out of sight
I really need someone to talk to, and nobody else
Knows how to comfort me tonight

Snow is cold, rain is wet
Chills my soul right to the marrow
I won't be happy till I see you alone again
Till I'm home again and feeling right

Snow is cold, rain is wet
Chills my soul right to the marrow
I won't be happy till I see you alone again
Till I'm home again and feeling right
Till I'm home again and feeling right

I wanna be home again and feeling right

See you later today, baby.

Homeward Bound

I'm sitting in the railway station.
Got a ticket for my destination.
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand.
And ev'ry stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band.
Homeward bound,

I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

Ev'ry day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines.
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And ev'ry stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be,
Homeward bound,

I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

Tonight I'll sing my songs again,
I'll play the game and pretend.
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me.
Homeward bound,

I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.
Silently for me.

I'll be home soon my love.

Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Old Oak Tree

I'm comin' home, I've done my time
Now I've got to know what is and isn't mine
If you received my letter tellin' you I'd soon be free
Then you'll know just what to do if you still want me
If you still want me

CHORUS:
Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree
It's been three long years
Do you still want me?
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
I'll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree

Bus driver, please look for me
'Cause I couldn't bear to see what I might see
I'm really still in prison, and my love she holds the key
A simple yellow ribbon's what I need to set me free
I wrote and told her please:

REPEAT CHORUS

Now the whole damn bus is cheering
And I can't believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons 'round the old oak tree
I'm comin' home
